Hello,
A bit about me. I am a retired Registered Nurse of 30+ years. I live in California, USA. I have been married for more years than many have birthdays! I have 2 sons, one whom is disabled and continues to live at home. I have 2 lovely grandchildren that are the light of my life.
My relationship with alcohol has been challenging for most of my adult life. The last 5 years of my drinking days really escalated, resulting in isolation from activities and friends. Why couldn't I stop drinking, or at least cut down?
Being a nurse added even more guilt and shame because I knew all too well what damage alcohol was doing to my mind and body. After many day 1’s and countless data points, I finally decided to seek coaching and began exploring alcohol free communities. What a difference that made! Being with other people who where in a similar situation, was a game changer. With the help of my community and with coaching I was finally able to “make the shift", which I never thought was possible for me....only for others. I now choose “not to drink” vs "I can't drink". That’s a totally different mindset!
While working as a nurse, it became apparent that I was not alone and that there were many other healthcare workers that were also experiencing problematic relationships with alcohol. And like me, most were reluctant to seek help for fear of "being found out" in a profession that has very high standards and expectations. For example, I used an alias last name and a landscape picture for my profile photo when first participating in my sober communities, solely due to my concern about privacy. I get it! Privacy is of utmost importance to me.
